The spectacular setting of the Cathedral and Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Southwell, Nottinghamshire saw the Bailiff’s Special Investiture on Saturday 2nd August 2014.
Hosted by the Commandery of King Offa, it was a splendid occasion with some 100 members, guests and visitors in attendance. A triumphal fanfare for Trumpet and Organ heralded the arrival of the Bailiff, His Excellency the Chevalier Charles Holloway, GCLJ, KMLJ, Executive Officers and members of the Grand Priory, Commandery and Clergy as they processed into the magnificent Minster Quire. Air Vice-Marshal Canon Robin Turner, on behalf of The Dean and Chapter of Southwell Minster, welcomed those present; the service was conducted by the Commandery Chaplain, The Reverend John Burgess, ChLJ, BMLJ assisted by seven chaplains of the Order. Colonel The Reverend Father Ian Evans, SChLJ, MMLJ, SCF, Chaplain-General of The Grand Priory of England and Wales, preached an inspirational sermon; the choir was the Florian Singers, who, as well as leading the congregational singing, performed choral works by Viadana, Stanford and Goss. The Presiding Officer at the Investiture was the Bailiff, assisted many distinguished members of the Order.
Following the service of investiture, the Saracen’s Head Inn was the venue for an excellent banquet to conclude this highly successful and memorable day.
