COMMANDERY SUMMER SOCIAL - 9th July, 2011
On a sunny summer afternoon, members and friends met for an informal social gathering in the gardens of Ashton House, Beetham, by kind permission of our Chancellor, Confrere Gordon Fairclough and his wife, Ingrid. Thank you, Gordon and Ingrid, for allowing us to use your home in this manner. The ladies of the Commandery had generously brought sandwiches and other delicious comestibles to complement the fare. A fruit cake, made by Dianne Uttley and decorated with the cross of the Order, was auctioned. A special thank you should go to Melanie Brakewell who supplied the flower displays on the main table and who worked for some considerable time in the kitchen preparing food with Dianne. Altogether, it was a splendid afternoon and we look forward to an interesting article in ‘The Lancashire’ magazine.
Celebration of Seasonal Music – 10th December 2011
On Saturday 10th December, the Cumbria Commandery held a recital of Music, performed by the Yule Singers, led by Martyn Yule. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, after which the performers joined members of the Order and guests for a glass of wine and refreshments. The proceeds from this event are to be divided between Help for Heroes and Cancercare. Thanks are due to all involved in organising this delightful occasion.
Annual St Lazarus Day Church Service – 17th December 2011
The Cumbria Commandery held its annual church service for the Feast of St Lazarus in the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Beetham on the 17th December 2011 - a very cold and icy day. Owinge to the conditions under foot, it was decided not to process ormally to the church from the Chancellor’s home. The service was conducted by our former Chaplain, The Reverend Canon Graham Bettridge SChLJ.
Afterwards, 26 members of the Order and guests retired to The Wheatsheaf, opposite the church, for a convivial buffet lunch.
