ANNUAL COMMANDERY CAROL SERVICE - Saturday 17th December, 2016
Cumbria Commandery held their Commandery Annual Church Service on Saturday 17th December.
On a slightly damp misty morning, 12 Commandery members, together with 4 members from King Offa Commandery marched from the Commander’s House to the church of St Michael and All Angels, Beetham.
The service was lead by The Reverend Canon Graham Bettridge SChLJ, a former Commandery Chaplain, and accompanied by Charles Edmondson on the organ.
Following the service 24 members, friends and guests attended an excellent buffet lunch at The Wellies Cafe, Greenlands Farm Village, Tewifield.

FUNDRAISING HOG ROAST in aid of the Royal Children’s’ Hospital Manchester - Saturday 16th July, 2016
On a gloriously sunny summer afternoon, members of both Cumbria and King Offa Commanderies, together with family, friends and guests gathered at the home and gardens of our Chancellor, Chev. Dr Richard Shepherd and his wife, Dr Monica Shepherd.
The afternoon’s entertainment including guessing the depth of the well in the garden, the weight of the cake made for The Children's Hospital, and where their dog was found having escaped recently! There was also a football competition, archery and other games, held in a neighbouring field to entertain the younger people present.
A very succulent Hog Roast was provided together with scones, cakes, tea, coffee or a glass of wine to follow.
Thank you, Richard and Monica, for allowing us to use your garden.
Altogether, it was a splendid afternoon of socialising together, which raised around £1,500 for the Royal Children’s’ Hospital, Manchester.

GARDEN PARTY & AUCTION - Tuesday 25th August, 2015
On a gloriously sunny summer afternoon, 21 members and friends met for an informal social gathering in the gardens of Beetham House Lodge, Beetham, by kind permission of Confrere David Jupe OLJ and Councillor Pru Jupe.
Thank you, David and Pru, for allowing us to use your home in this manner, and for the excellent refreshments provided.
During the afternoon, our Chaplain, The Revd David Brown ChLJ was the auctioneer, selling items that members had provided to raise money for our charitable funds.
Altogether, it was a splendid afternoon of friendship, fun and good fellowship.
DEDICATION OF A COMMANDERY CROSS OF THE ORDER - Saturday 17th May, 2014
10 members of the Cumbria Commandery and their guests gathered to attend a Service of Dedication for a new Commandery Cross of the Order at the church of St Peter's, Scorton. We welcomed to the service, which was conducted by the Cumbria Commandery Chaplain, The Reverend David Brown ChLJ, the Commander of Mersey Commandery, Dame Lesley=Martin-Wright DLJ, and several people from Scorton.
After the service members, friends and guests enjoyed lunch together at The Barn, Scorton.
ANNUAL CHURCH SERVICE - Saturday 14th December, 2013
Our Annual Church Service for the Feast of St Lazarus took place on Saturday 14th December 2013 at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Beetham. The service was conducted by our Commandery Chaplain, The Reverend David Brown ChLJ, and the Organist was Charles Edmondson. The service was attended by members, including 4 members of John of Gaunt Commandery, and guests. After the service, members and guests joined for lunch at the Wheatsheaf, Beetham.
ANNUAL CHURCH SERVICE - Sunday 15th December 2012
The Annual Church Service for the Feast of St Lazarus was held in the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Beetham on the 15th December 2012. This year's service was conducted by the Reverend David Brown ChLJ, who kindly deputised for our Commandery Chaplain, the Reverend John Brockbank ChLJ.
Following the service 26 members and guests retired to 'The Wheatsheaf', opposite the church, for a convivial buffet lunch, organised by our Social Secretary, Confrere David Jupe MLJ.
EVENSONG, CARLISLE CATHEDRAL - Sunday 30th September 2012
Members of the Order and their friends were privileged to attend The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Carlisle, for sung Evensong, organised on behalf of the Cumbria Commandery by Chevalier Charles and Madam May McKerrell of Hillhouse. A piper led members of the Order in procession to their seats in the choir. Also present were the Mayor and Mayoress of Carlisle and HM Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, James Cropper KStJ and Lady Cropper. The Lessons were read by Chev. Gareth Vaughan, Secretary-General of the Grand Priory of England & Wales and Mrs Ingrid Fairclough, wife of the Acting Commander of Cumbria. Sarah Nancollas, Chief Executive of Lepra, gave a highly informative and moving address. The Revd Canon Graham Bettridge SChLJ, first chaplain of the Cumbria Commandery, led the intercessions. After the service, members of the Order and guests were piped to the Fratry for tea. The Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem greatly appreciates the kindness of the Dean and Chapter, staff and volunteers of the cathedral, who made this a memorable event in the inspiring beauty of a great and historic cathedral church.
COMMANDERY SUMMER SOCIAL - 9th July, 2011
On a sunny summer afternoon, members and friends met for an informal social gathering in the gardens of Ashton House, Beetham, by kind permission of our Chancellor, Confrere Gordon Fairclough and his wife, Ingrid. Thank you, Gordon and Ingrid, for allowing us to use your home in this manner. The ladies of the Commandery had generously brought sandwiches and other delicious comestibles to complement the fare. A fruit cake, made by Dianne Uttley and decorated with the cross of the Order, was auctioned. A special thank you should go to Melanie Brakewell who supplied the flower displays on the main table and who worked for some considerable time in the kitchen preparing food with Dianne. Altogether, it was a splendid afternoon and we look forward to an interesting article in ‘The Lancashire’ magazine.
Celebration of Seasonal Music – 10th December 2011
On Saturday 10th December, the Cumbria Commandery held a recital of Music, performed by the Yule Singers, led by Martyn Yule. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, after which the performers joined members of the Order and guests for a glass of wine and refreshments. The proceeds from this event are to be divided between Help for Heroes and Cancercare. Thanks are due to all involved in organising this delightful occasion.
Annual St Lazarus Day Church Service – 17th December 2011
The Cumbria Commandery held its annual church service for the Feast of St Lazarus in the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Beetham on the 17th December 2011 - a very cold and icy day. Owinge to the conditions under foot, it was decided not to process ormally to the church from the Chancellor’s home. The service was conducted by our former Chaplain, The Reverend Canon Graham Bettridge SChLJ.
Afterwards, 26 members of the Order and guests retired to The Wheatsheaf, opposite the church, for a convivial buffet lunch.
