King Offa Commandery - pilgrimage to Whitby

Saint Hilda is one of Whitby’s most famous historical residents. She was the abbess in charge of the Abbey during the Synod of Whitby in the year 664. This incredibly important meeting took place in her monastery and was called to resolve the date of Easter. Until this meeting, Celtic and Roman Christians celebrated the event on different dates. This was a landmark change in English Christianity.

The Order of St Lazarus pilgrims worshipped in the Chapel at the Convent of the Holy Paraclete at Seaton Castle on Friday afternoon and a Service of Matins was held on Saturday morning in the Church of St Mary the Virgin overlooking the harbour.

The Commander, Chevalier Mario Rizzardi KCLJ MMLJ, was sponsored to ascend the famous 199 steps to Whitby Abbey raising valuable funds for the Order’s charitable work.

The Pilgrimage to North Yorkshire was unanimously agreed by everyone to have been a very special time to enjoy a closer walk with God and each other.
