Saint Hilda is one of Whitby’s most famous historical residents. She was the abbess in charge of the Abbey during the Synod of Whitby in the year 664. This incredibly important meeting took place in her monastery and was called to resolve the date of Easter. Until this meeting, Celtic and Roman Christians celebrated the event on different dates. This was a landmark change in English Christianity.

The Service of Investiture of the Grand Priory of England and Wales was held on Saturday 30th April 2022 at the splendid St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge, London, by permission of the vicar, The Revd Canon Alan Gyle SChLJ. At 11.00am prompt, the procession entered the Church to the rousing organ voluntary ‘Introduction- Choral’ from Suite Gothique, Op. 25 composed by Léon Boëllmann.

Each November, the City of London is host to a spectacular parade celebrating the election of the new Lord Mayor ‘for the year ensuing’.  The Lord Mayor’s Show is the largest and oldest street pageant in the world and first took place in 1215.  These days, the 3-mile long procession comprises some 150 floats, along with marching bands and ceremonial officers.

A further donation to the Grand Priory’s Lebanon Appeal was received towards the end of October from Ethan Bradley MLJ, a member of Mersey Commandery, currently living and working in Singapore. Ethan completed a sponsored walk of the island (113.7km or 70.65 miles) and raised £912, which the Trust will make up to £1,000.
